Discussion- Editing techniques within this video

As a class we had a discussion about; the original  video of Rihanna- We Found Love and the editing techniques used.

Summary of the Narrative

  We know that the narrative is about, how the two people are madly in love but it is not a brilliant relationship. It is a relationship that has just as much bad times as well as the good times; these good times are so good they don't mind the bad times. Through out the video it shows more bad times than good this tells us that they are getting worse and she begins to get fed up with the bad. At the end she then comes to turns that there will always be bad in the relationship but she can not deal with how bad it is getting, so she walks out. Even though she knows it is for the best, she is also hurt and we know that from the last clip at the end where she is in the corner of the room.
  As a class we came to the conclusion that the content of the video linked extremely well with the narrative behind the song itself.

Editing Techniques Used

  Within the group we realised the clips within the music video were no longer than 2-3 seconds long, they each went to the melody of the song. There is no specific order that the clips go in they seem to be randomly placed- this is called a discontinuity order so cut she would be on one table in the chip shop and the next cut she could be on the floor- to sum it up there is no direct flow.

  The chop and cut style of editing is used in the majority of pop/ dance music videos. The main reason for this is to keep the audience interested in the video; as the majority of the younger generation have a shorter attention spam, in comparison to an older person who could watch a black and white movie with sub titles easily. Many youth could not do that willingly or with there full attention.
  It is done to keep the video more up beat and in time with the music. This could be done by cutting or changing to the next scene on beat of a specific instrument or melody, or it could be done by the actor moving in such a way it emphasises that part of the song, another way it could be done is by an image or random clip is also in time with that melody.
  In this music video it is done in all of the ways mentioned above.
In conclusion the editing techniques used has made the music video more interesting, it is a video that can be watched many times and each time you watch it you will notice something different.

Analysis of performers costume/ style & 'look'

The person that we have asked to perform in this video usually wears the style of clothes we are aiming for, this making him suitable for the role and this way we save money by not having to buy any type of costume.

This is a music animation, painting notes on a score, telling a story. It tells a story giving a civic and environmental message, in a soft and kind way. They have edited it in a way that every note played synchronizes with each note that is drew.

 This video is a narrative music video as it is narrating the lyrics and the meaning behind the song itself.


Mise En Scene

• Location, settings & props

Out doors, subways, road side

• Costume, hair & make-up

They are wearing similar clothes which are tracksuits, hoods up, jeans.

• Facial expressions & body language

acting 'bad', hand gestures like Eminem himself, angry faces. they put one finger up when it says 'one shot'

• Lighting & colour

During the day, but also dusk. It gets darker in some shots showing a more 'urban feel' to the video.
Dark and light. The colours of the surroundings are used.

• Positioning of characters/ objects in the frame.

Close ups- when they are rapping and making more expression on there faces.

Long shots- to get the surroundings in or when they are just walking/ sitting still.

Mid shots- when they are showing and moving there hands.

Type (Performance, Narrative, concept, mixed)

This a performance and narrative video as some parts will match the lyrics in the song which is part of a video, but the performance part is when they are saying and 'rapping' they move around a lot just like a rapper would, and there facial expressions show they are acting and being emotion for the story/ song they are rapping/singing.

How well it follows conventions of hip-hop music video 

This follows the conventions well as the video clips are not that long and are changing often. There is also different shots of there surroundings and this is done frequently to try and give a more urban feel to it as this is where hip-hop and rap originated from- the streets and underground world of music.

Pre-production Locations safety check

School Theater
 In the theater we will have to make sure that there is no lose equiptment (wires/ lights) around to reduce the trip hazard
 
School Music Studio
 We will only have the instruments needed in the room so we will make sure that there is no lose wires or other instruments so the performer will not trip or knock/damage them.

Belgrade Theater
 Outside we will make sure the path is clear of litter and trip hazards, as well as clearing the path so we are not knocked by the public or knock into them. We will film on a day that it is not wet so there is no chance he can slip.

Car Park
 In the car park it will be dark and the lights of the car and lamp posts will be all that is giving off lights so we will clear the space of shopping trolleys (litter/ unwanted props) so there is no way the wind can blow them towards the filming area. We will do this so the performer will not get tripped up or knocked down.
We will do it in the quietest part of the car park so there is no chance of a car driving past and ruining the shot and/ or hitting anyone.

We also discussed a budget if we needed to spend any money; we come to the conclusion that we would not need to spend any money at all so there is no need for a budget plan.
